Fazenda Bodoquena is a 190,000-acres area that spans both the Cerrado and Pantanal regions in Mato Grosso do Sul, where more than 50% of the land is protected native vegetation. In this remarkable area, Reservas Votorantim has partnered to manage activities related to conservation, maintenance and the implementation of green economy initiatives, developing various sustainable business opportunities while assessing the potential and suitability of the land.

Ongoing Initiatives

Since 2021, Reservas Votorantim has been mapping the potential of Fazenda Bodoquena for the application of a carbon credit project and other possible ventures, based on a multiple land use management model. In 2023, the first steps were taken to develop the REDD Pantanal project, which aims to generate forest carbon credits under the REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) scheme on the farm’s land, and is currently under verification.

In the same format, a REDD+ project has also been developed for the farm’s Cerrado area, registered as REDD Carbonflor, replicating the successful model applied in Legado Verdes do Cerrado, an area managed by Reservas Votorantim in northern Goiás. The project’s credits are expected to be certified between 2024 and 2025.

The significant socio-economic and environmental co-benefits of these projects include advances in the conservation of the Pantanal – the largest wetland on the planet – and the Cerrado – the most biodiverse tropical savannah in the world. Benefits also include greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions, social development, avoided deforestation and biodiversity conservation.

The credits generated will be allocated to the voluntary carbon market, benefiting environmentally and socially responsible companies.

Business Model

Legado das Águas materializes Votorantim’s commitment to the conservation of land, water resources and development of communities. The advanced conservation stage of the reservation is a rarity in Brazil, and is becoming the benchmark for new models of private conservation whose activities generate sustainable social, environmental, and economic benefits.
